Load management—also called smart charging or dynamic load balancing—is a technology that allows your EV charger to share your home’s or building’s electrical capacity safely, without overloading the panel. It’s one of the most important concepts in modern EV charging, especially for older homes with smaller panels.
The Problem: Limited Panel Capacity. A Level 2 EV charger draws 30–60 amps. If your home has a 100‑amp panel, adding that load could exceed the panel’s safe capacity—especially when the air conditioner, dryer, and oven are running. Traditionally, the solution was a costly panel upgrade. Load management offers an alternative.
How Load Management Works: A load management system continuously monitors your home’s total electrical usage. When the panel approaches its safe limit, the system automatically reduces or pauses EV charging until capacity frees up. Some systems use a current transformer (CT) clamp on your main service wires to measure total load in real time. Others integrate with a smart meter.
